OEM Thermostat for Toyota Hilux Surf / 4Runner KZN130 / KZN185 | 2nd & 3rd Gen 89-02
$83.00
Bulletproof Your Cooling System and Save Yourself Thousands in Repair Bills.
You drive a legend. The 2nd and 3rd Gen Hilux Surfs are known worldwide for being practically indestructible, conquering trails, and clocking up hundreds of thousands of kilometers without breaking a sweat.
But if you own one, especially with the 1KZ-TE or 2L-TE diesel under the bonnet, you already know about its one fatal flaw. Overheating.
It starts with the temperature gauge creeping past the halfway mark on a steep hill climb. Then comes the loss of power. And finally, the ultimate nightmare: a cracked cylinder head or a blown head gasket. Just like that, your weekend is ruined, and you're staring down the barrel of a massive mechanic's bill.
The #1 culprit for this catastrophic failure? A cheap, aftermarket thermostat that decided to stick closed.
When it comes to the cooling system on an aging Surf, "close enough" isn't good enough. Generic auto-parts-store thermostats rarely flow the correct amount of coolant, their springs degrade quickly, and they completely lack the precise engineering required to keep your specific engine in the safe zone.
Stop gambling with your rig's life. Upgrade to the Genuine OEM Toyota Thermostat.
This isn't just a replacement part; it's a cheap insurance policy for your engine. Designed exactly to Toyota's rigorous factory specifications, this OEM thermostat guarantees your 2nd Gen (N130) or 3rd Gen (N185) Surf stays cool, calm, and collected, no matter how hard you push it.
Why Genuine OEM is the ONLY Choice for Your Surf:
- Precision Temperature Control: Opens precisely at the factory-specified temperature (unlike aftermarket variants that often open too late), eliminating dangerous heat spikes and localised hot spots inside the block.
- The "Head Gasket Saver": Engineered for maximum coolant flow. This keeps the notoriously heat-sensitive 1KZ and 2L-TE cylinder heads perfectly stabilised, protecting your engine from warping and cracking.
- The Critical "Jiggle Valve": Features the factory-correct jiggle valve to automatically bleed trapped air from your cooling system — a feature cheap knock-offs often skip, leading to deadly air pockets.
- Zero-Guesswork Fitment: Drops perfectly into your 2nd or 3rd Gen Surf housing. No modifications, no leaks, no headaches.
- Legendary Durability: Built with high-grade copper and brass internals that won't corrode, stick, or fail when you're 100 kilometers away from the nearest sealed road.
Protect Your Pride and Joy
Think about it: Why risk thousands of dollars in engine damage just to save a few bucks on a vital cooling component? The peace of mind alone is worth its weight in gold.
Whether you're gearing up for a massive off-road expedition, towing heavy loads, or just relying on your Surf as your daily driver, you need to know your cooling system won't let you down.
Don't wait for the temp gauge to hit the red zone. It's already too late by then.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the OEM thermostat on a 2nd or 3rd Gen Hilux Surf?
Toyota recommends inspecting the thermostat at every major coolant flush and replacing it every 100,000 km or 5 years, whichever comes first. On a 1KZ-TE, a sticking thermostat is one of the most common causes of cracked heads, so most experienced owners replace it preventatively at every coolant change.
What is the difference between the 82°C and 71°C thermostat for the 1KZ-TE?
Both fit the same KZN130 / KZN185 / KDN185 housing — the difference is the temperature at which they open and let coolant flow to the radiator.
The 82°C unit (Toyota part 90916-03118) is the factory specification. It keeps the engine at its designed operating temperature, which means proper fuel economy, good heater performance in winter, and correct oil temperature. This is what we recommend for most owners and all standard driving.
The 71°C unit (90916-03121) is Toyota's "cool" variant. It opens 11 degrees earlier, so the radiator starts pulling heat out of the engine sooner and the whole system runs with more headroom before it hits stress temperatures. Choose this one if you tow heavy loads, run hot summer climates, tackle long steep climbs loaded up, or your 1KZ already sits above halfway on the gauge. The tradeoff is slightly longer warm-up time and marginally cooler running in winter, which most owners never notice.
If you are unsure, go the 82°C factory unit. If your Surf works hard for a living, go the 71°C.
Does this thermostat fit a V6 5VZ-FE Surf or 4Runner?
Yes — choose the VZN130 / VZN185 82° variant which uses Toyota part 90916-03075. This is a different physical thermostat to the 1KZ-TE diesel unit, so the engine code matters.
Do I need the gasket option or just the part?
If you've replaced your thermostat recently and the rubber O-ring/gasket is still in good condition, you can reuse it and just buy the part. If you're unsure, or the thermostat has been in there for years, the "Part + Gasket" option is the safer choice and avoids a second trip to the parts shop mid-install.
Is this a genuine Toyota OEM part?
Yes. This is a genuine Toyota OEM thermostat — not an aftermarket equivalent. The part numbers (90916-03118 / 90916-03121 / 90916-03075 / 90916-03120 / 90916-03099) match what Toyota dealerships supply. We stock these specifically because aftermarket thermostats are the leading cause of cracked heads on the 1KZ-TE.
